Character History: Mary is taken from the pilot episode which we don't see much of her initially, just that she is a wife and a doting mother. Seeming to sense something wrong she goes to check on her youngest son. Seeing a man in the room, she assumes it's her husband...something that she realizes is wrong when she finds her husband asleep in front of the TV. Rushing back to the room, she doesn't hesitate before trying to protect her child. This is the first clue that there is something different about her, something more than just a protective mother.
Later in the series, we see that we were right in our assumptions. Mary was a hunter when she was younger. Trained from a young age by her parents, she's killed in using bladed weapon, guns, and traps to hunt monsters that attack people. She's apparently not skilled in fighting demons as it's very easy for Azazel to get the upper hand on her and trick her into giving him access to her future child.
Raised by her parents, she's taught how to kill and lie, same as other young hunters. The difference in being a female hunter is that she's more guarded by her father, more protected. Protected to the point of while all she wants is to be a normal teenager going on dates with her boyfriend, she has to sneak around to do such things. A normal guy is no good for Samuel Campbell's only daughter and if she must date, he'd rather see her with a hunter, someone who could protect her if things got bad on a hunt. When Dean comes back in time and meets her, we see how protective Samuel can be and how trusting Mary is. While Samuel doesn't want to give Dean the time of day, Mary is very welcoming to him and invites him to stay for dinner.
While Dean is present, she mentions to him that the worst thing she can imagine is her children being raised as hunters. All she wants in her life is to be safe, to leave hunting far behind her and make a family with John. She can see her comments affects Dean, though she's not sure why, just files the thought away for later. While on a case, she finds out that a demon is in town, making deals with various people that can't find any other way to fix their problems. She can't imagine why anyone would resort to making a deal with such a loathsome creature. Hearing that the demon was targeting a friend of hers, her and Samuel make their way to the house to intervene, drawing the demons attention to her. This terrifies her, naturally, particularly when the demon makes it clear his attentions to her are anything but innocent.
When she's sure her friend is safe, Mary goes to spend a few hours with John to clear her head. While in the car, John proposes to her...right before he is pulled out by the demon, Azazel, and killed in front of her. Finally, she sees why others made deals with the demon and makes her own deal with him. In exchange for Johns life, Azazel can enter her home in ten years time and remain uninterrupted.
In 1978, Dean again returns to the past, but this time he brings Sam. When they come to their doorstep, John is welcoming to the boys, but Mary is not. The last time she saw Dean her parents were killed and he vanished without a word. Mary can't tell John why she's uncomfortable with them being there, but she slowly comes around after talking to Sam.
When the angel, Anna, attacks them...John finds out in the hardest way about Marys past. This of course gets him angry. Most of the anger is directed at her parents for raising her in a way that could have gotten her killed, and very mildly at Mary for hiding it from him. Seeing the danger that Mary is in, Dean tries to convince her to leave John, even knowing it will result in him and Sam never being born. It's at this time that she tells him she can't, that she's already pregnant with Dean.
During the battle, Anna gets the upper hand and makes an attempt to kill Mary. If Mary's dead, Dean and Sam will never be born which will solve many of the problems Anna has...however during this time Michael possesses John and kills Anna before Mary can be harmed. However, he also takes the memories of all that happened from Mary and John so things will happen in the way they are supposed to so she has no memories of Dean, Sam, or angels.
Abilities/Special Powers: She's skilled in bladed weapons and firearms.
Third-Person Sample:
Mary sat on the edge of her and Johns shared bed, her head resting in her hands. Her therapy sessions were helping, but it was still all so much to take in. Sam was so much older and John had changed so much. He had always been protective, but now he took it to extremes, so worried that she'd be hurt or killed. Part of her wanted to set him at ease, to tell him about how she'd been raised as a hunter...but she worried about what kind of outcome it would bring. He could take it well, but from what she'd seen so far she didn't think he'd take it as well as she was hoping. If anything, it might just make him more protective.
Groaning softly, she flopped back on the bed, her legs dangling off of the end. She still had nightmares...dreams of fire and pain. Nightmares of losing all of her friends and family. Of being alone and suffering with just her reflection for company. She'd seen so much since getting here and had been hid away from so much of it. For Gods sake, she knew she looked young enough to be Johns child, but she wasn't. She was a fully grown mother and a retired hunter.
She had to make everyone see she was capable. She had to show them she could handle herself and didn't need a protector.
Sitting up suddenly, she had a thought. If she could find a monster and kill it, she could show them all what she could do. She could show John she didn't need him to be there all the time to protect her. John might kill her for it, but it would be worth it. Grabbing her communicator, she dug out one of his guns and started loading it.
First-Person Sample: [Mary comes on the eed, a gun in her hands. She looks slightly apologetic but determined.]
Hey, so I'm going on a little hunting trip. Normally, I wouldn't say anything, but I know my family would worry and I don't want that.
John, Sammy...don't come after me. I love you, but I don't need your help or this. I'll show you that I can do this, that I don't need constant supervision. Trust me, and when I get back, I have something to tell you both. Something I should have said when I first got here.
